Later, she read Blake and Shelley, and her poetry in the school literary journal was closer to the Victorian taste. She was captain of the debating team and secretary for the math team. She traveled to Manhattan during school days to take college courses in French. She studied painting at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. On weekends, she and her more daring friends took their guitars to play in Washington Square Park. Despite these accomplishments, the parents of Eleanor’s friends were uneasy about the Stein family. Her school chums had brought home awed tales of her outspoken classroom defenses of socialism. After Annie and Arthur traveled to Cuba, Eleanor’s best friend Naomi was told by her parents that she must never see the Steins again, ensuring the girls’ lifelong friendship.
Each summer since grade school, the end of exams had brought Camp Lakeside, where Eleanor was sent with other leftist children to stay in a cluster of sagging cabins along a mosquito-rich pond in Norwich, Connecticut. To suppress class distinctions, campers were forbidden from bringing their own clothes. Instead, all were outfitted in blue jeans and T-shirts, and on laundry days the girls fought like fishwives for the best ones.
This summer, she was to be spared Camp Lakeside. The family had gone in April to update their passports for one month of touring in England, France, and Italy. In fact, they had other plans. For years, angry passersby seeing Annie and Arthur on the picket lines had yelled, “Why don’t you go back to Russia?” The Steins were finally going to take this advice. The whole family—including Arthur’s aging mother, Sadie—was returning to the shtetls from whence it had come more than half a century earlier. Their flight was leaving on July 15.
